"When Winter Comes"
"When Winter Comes" was published in the romance anthology The Queen in Winter. I wanted to write a story set in the Twelve Houses world and following characters that were familiar but not essential to the overall story arc. That way, anyone who hadn’t read the novels would be able to read this piece on its own. Then, once I introduced Lara in this story, I liked her so much I brought her briefly back into the third and fourth novels of the series. |

"Bargain with the Wind"
"Bargain with the Wind" appears in the romance anthology Elemental Magic. From the very beginning, I considered it to be the Cinderella story told with the gothic sensibility of Emily Bronte. Like The Shape Changer’s Wife, this piece had its first incarnation as a poetry cycle I wrote in college. Unlike SCW, this novella follows that poetry cycle very faithfully—and the last line of the story is almost exactly the same as the last line of the final poem.

"The Sorcerer’s Assassin" appears in the mystery/fantasy anthology Powers of Detection. The majority of my books feature protagonists who are younger than 30, so I had a great time writing the character of Camalyn, who is old, spiteful, and wily. I keep thinking I could put her at the center of a novel someday.

"The Double-Edged Sword" appears in Elemental, a science fiction anthology whose proceeds went to tsunami relief. I was so honored to be included in such an endeavor! This story is set in the same world as one of my unsold manuscripts and features a deck of cards that I swear I wish I had.

The story grew out of a conversation I had with my brother and emails I exchanged with my friend Mark. Because I stole some of Mark's comments, I named one of the characters for him. |

It’s a story about a writer named Erica who rents a house for the summer and finds it tenanted by an assortment of ghosts, all of whom died there. Until Erica can solve the mystery behind one of the deaths, none of the ghosts will ever be at rest. |

"The Wrong Bridegroom"
Since the theme of this anthology was “feminist fairy tales,” I titled each of my chapters after a typical fairy tale trope, such as “The Wicked Stepmother” and “The Wise Old Grandmother” and “The Dreadful Secret.” About half of the titles are ironic. But everyone does enjoy “The Happy Ending.” Well, almost everyone. |

“Nocturne” appears in the anthology Angels of Darkness. It’s a very gothic tale, at least at the beginning—my working title was “Angel in the Attic.” Although it takes place about 70 years after Archangel, there are echoes of that book throughout. So of course I had to reread Archangel AGAIN before I wrote this!
